Walk Faversham

The idea for Walk Swale Medway came to me, perhaps unsurprisingly, when I was out walking. I started wandering around Faversham early one morning in late June 2013. By the time I had explored for 11 days straight, I was completely hooked on the idea of walking everyday, forever. I have learned more about my town, the landscape, and the seasons in the last year than in all of my previous time in Faversham. I may have learned more about this place than perhaps any other I have lived in my whole life. I have learned about myself and the people around me, I have spoken with neighbours it has taken me 13 years to meet. It has made me feel more a part of my community.

Walk Swale Medway is an extension of this, because the more I learn, the more I realise how little I know about the part of the world closest to me. So I’m going to walk with an openness and willingness to be out in the world, to be part of it, sharing, listening, finding generosity, kindness, surprises, and knowledge just by putting one foot in front of the other. I have heard a pilgrimage described as belief combined with action. For me, Walk Swale Medway is a pilgrimage of community, humanity, kindness, and creativity. It is personal celebration and an invitation to connect. I don’t mean it to sound too grand – but it is big enough to fill me to the brim with joy.
